Log Book: November 3rd

Conditions: 25 mph NW wind
Location: Mobjack Bay

Dad and I left Urbanna this morning, ready to make up for the traveling time we had lost. The heavy winds were paired with steep waves that made it hard to steer. We reefed the main sail but the boat still went about 7 knots. For me it was an uncomfortable ride the waves and wind were coming from our stern, forcing the boat to surf. Dad said that our friend Jack calls this "Nantuckett sledding," presumably because the boat was surrounded by the white foam on the crest of the wave. It took a lot of energy out of Dad and I to steer the boat on course so we finally decided to turn into Mobjack Bay. Once inside the bay the waves were less steep but the wind direction forced us into a series of short tacks upwind. Spray came over the dodger and into the cockpit frequently here. Luckily it wasn't too cold out, we both looked like we had taken salt water showers by the time we entered a protective cove. We let down the anchor and relaxed. We ate hotdogs, too tired to make a formal dinner. We listened to the weather and discovered the wind conditions would remain the same for tomorrow. So we decided to stay the day in Mobjack.

Spotted: bubbling water, a fish frenzie
